The Rotary Club of Polk County joined with other organizations to provide Christmas for the foster children of Polk County. Our club was provided a list of children with their "wish list" of items wanted and needed, and - with donations from our friends and members - we were able to sponsor over 20 children!
Murphy-Harpst is an independent not-for-profit organization committed to
meeting the needs of abused and neglected young people through
residential treatment, placements in specialized foster care, and
community programs that serve at-risk youth and their families. Located in Cedartown, the organization is always in need of support in many different areas. The Rotary Club of Polk County plans to work with Murphy Harpst in planting a garden. This will allow us to work alongside the children and will allow them to see the fruit of their labors. We believe this exercise will cultivate more than a few vegetables.
The Ferst Foundation addresses one of the most basic issues of childhood literacy-ensuring the availability of quality books in the home so that parents can read to their child. Donations to this organization allows every registered child to receive a book by mail every month until they reach the age of 5. This program is open to every child born in the county. The Rotary Club of Polk County supports this program with a donation each year. It costs $36 to sponsor a child for a year.
The Rotary Club of Polk County was approached by an organization in our community requesting help with their food bank. The club held a 5K fundraiser to replenish the food in our local food banks.
Each year, the Rotary Club of Polk County supports adult education by providing funds to our local technical college - Georgia Northwestern Technical College - to cover the cost of GED testing. This year, we will be covering the cost of two tests.
Each year, the Rotary Club of Polk County awards two scholarships to two deserving seniors - one from Rockmart High School and one from Cedartown High School. The scholarships are $500 each. The applications are submitted to the Rotary Club and the club provides a panel of judges to select the winners.
Each week, our club prepares a club bulletin which highlights the current program, the sponsor, and any other upcoming news important to the club. We also try to provide some humor by inserting some riddles/jokes appropriate for meeting audiences.
